What can you do with Bamboo?

Walking past the rather extensive (and cheap) bamboo collection at Bunnings recently, I started to think:  What can we do with bamboo?

Here are some ideas:

1.  Bamboo Guttering for water play:

2.  Making Music:

8.  Bamboo in the Sandpit:

9.  Writing with Bamboo pens (click on the link to Flights of Whimsy for "How to's")

So there you have it.  Another cheap, natural, open ended resource for early childhood settings.

How about you?  Have you used bamboo?

  1. WE have planted Oldhammii in Melbourne 2 years ago. I'm delighted with how it hs grown and the children are now able to use it as a jungle/cubbies. I pruned it last week, removing some of the older poles for new growth and we made a great cubby with the off cuts. good to know there are many other things I can use them for. After 2 years the new poles are thicker than an adults wrist so will be great for future use. Ig ou plant it make sure you get clumping not running varieties.

  2. Thanks for mention my recent blog post - bamboo is brilliant. When I was in Japan I just loved all the bamboo features I saw particularly in gardens. We also had a lot of fun playing with it - here's some more ideas to whet your appetite

  3. Where is the best place to source bamboo like this?

  4. Looks like great fun for all the kids involved!

  5. This all looks so lovely. Its a shame bamboo isn't more freely (and cheaply) available over/around here. Its such a beautiful material and perfect for heuristic play.

  6. This is fabulous! Can't wait to try some of these. I am going to build a bamboo hut and grow veggies up it. Also a "day and night" tee pee with morning glories and moon flowers! Thanks!

  7. Great ideas with the bamboo Jenny and want to make the one like the 1st or 2nd photo, but cant find anywhere to buy. Tried Ebay and Amazon and garden centres

    Kind regards, Ron Turner..

  8. Love your grass roots approach to play. Who knew you could do so many great things with bamboo?

  9. Wow! I absolutely love these ideas!

  10. Great ideas. I think this is the best way through which kids learns while playing. Thanks I got ideas as I am running preschool.
