cooking with herbs in the pretend play kitchen

It's always busy in home corner.  You never quite know what's cooking.

Adding a few interesting 'real' ingredients always goes down a treat.

We headed out into our (very overgrown) herb garden to select a few of our choicest herbs.

We looked.  We touched.  We smelt.  We tasted.  We picked.

And then it was back to the kitchen for some serious cooking.

I'm always amazed at how a few simple touches can be all it takes to spark long periods of engagement.

What do you do to spice up your pretend play areas?

For more on playful gardening with children:

  1. What a wonderful idea. When my daughter was little we went to a group where they had herbs as part of one activity. Great post.

  2. I definitely enjoying every little bit of it and I have you bookmarked to check out new stuff you post."

    glue removal
    floor levelling
    Polished concrete sydney
    concrete repairs
    concrete coatings

  3. I love recycling old "real" things. Calculators, phones, food boxes taped up with clear packing tape, but my daughter's favorite inspiration comes from a box of fabric scraps. They can be pretty much anything!

Another versatile item to have on hand is pipe cleaners... they tie things together, make letters, jewelry, sign holders, etc.

  4. Great to see that you cook with so many herbs, might as well include spices and condiments too.
    Beautiful pics.
