Inspiring Playscapes: St Leonard's College ELC

What do you think about a regular feature on Let the Children Play to spotlight early childhood centres doing wonderful things in the area of outdoor play?

Inspiring Playscapes will take you on a tour around different outdoor learning environments so that we can share our own centres; find inspiration from others and celebrate the importance of outdoor play in early childhood.

First cab off the rank:

St Leonard's College Early Learning Centre, Cornish Campus
Patterson River, Victoria

Situated on 80 acres of marshland, St Leonard's College ELC has it's own lake, farm animals, bird hides, an orchard and even a fairy forest.

And if that isn't enough to make you green with envy, each week they pack a wagon with supplies for the morning and head off into the great outdoors.

Off they go to their gathering place on the island in the middle of the lake - I know, an island - where they build a campfire, cook, build cubbies, sing or simply have time for adventure.

There are endless opportunities for risky play and challenge, as well as quiet places for investigation and  discovery.

Children are invited to reflect on their experience through discussion and drawing which are kept in a journal as part of the meaning making for the children; the learning is made visible.

Would you like your centre to feature on inspiring preschools?

Would you like to share an aspect of your outdoor learning environment or program?

Drop me a line and let's get the ball rolling.
