celebrating the joys of mud play in childhood

Grab you gumboots - today is International Mud Day!

Mud is very nice to feel
All squishy-squash between the toes!
I'd rather wade in wiggly mud
Than smell a yellow rose.
Mud by Polly Chase Boyden

Mud, mud, glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
So follow me follow, down to the hollow
And there let me wallow in glorious mud.
- The Hippopotamus Song

"People murder a child when they tell him to keep out of the dirt.  In dirt, there is life."
George Washington Carver

"The world is mud-luscious and puddle-wonderful." -e. e. cummings

I splatter in the grimy gloop,
I can't resist the ooze!
I run, I jump, I stamp about,
It drips into my shoes!
- I'm in Love with Mud by Gareth Lancaster

Need some mud play inspiration?  Jamie from Hands on: As we Grow has rounded up an impressive 30 Dirty Kid Activities and is hosting a muddy blog hop in celebration of International Mud Day.

Have you been playing in the mud lately?
Do you have fond memories of playing in the mud from childhood?
In the spirit of International Mud Day, let's share them in the comments below.
