reuse old cd's for craft and play

On my last visit to teacher's heaven aka Reverse Garbage I found a load of old CD's to reuse at preschool.  I had the perfect irresistible idea of a CD mobile in mind:

with thanks from Sherry and Donna at Irresistible Ideas for Play based Learning

We set the CD's out with an array of crafty odds and ends and glue.

The novelty of using the CD's as the base for collage made for a popular activity.

The kids are really into using small, fiddly bits and pieces at the moment and careful, precise placement.

The glue eventually dries clear.

We don't have anything as snazzy as the irresistible ladies to hang our mobiles on, so we found a stick and hung them from the roof of the veranda.  They look pretty moving in the breeze.

We have also used the old cd's to make these snazzy cd spinners:

If it seems that the bulk of our experiences with children come from Irresistible Ideas for Play based Learning, you could be right!  Hop on over to Sherry and Donna's blog for step by step CD spinner instructions that will have the kids spinning away in no time.

  1. I love how you've used our idea as a base Jenny but made it totally your own. Adding the beads and collage materials to the C.D's looks terrific and they look great hanging from the verandah! If you happen to have any left over C.D's you could always jazzy up some hovercraft! http://www.playbasedlearning.com.au/2010/07/more-flying-machines/

  2. Very cute idea. As far as the CD cases themselves, they can be made into mini greenhouses for a few seeds at a time or else to hold scavenger hunt cards or any other little cards you might have for children.

Thanks for your neat ideas. We have loads of old CDs so this would be fun to do.

    Have a good week,
    Colleen:)

  3. LOVE this! The children in my earth school would enjoy this !

OOOh and perhaps we could attend little bells to them when we hang them and will make a delightful noise in the wind :)

    happy day!

  5. I love this idea. I have plenty of old CDs to use up too. (I also like the comment above by Marcia to attach bells). I'm thinking we could make some Christmas ones!
