Soap Balls

Soap balls from Beautiful Sun Montessori
Do you find yourself scratching your head over the perfect christmas gift to make for parents?

The minute I saw these soap balls over at the wonderful Beautiful Sun Montessori I knew we were onto a winner.  Simple to make, useful and a wonderful creative and sensory experience for the children to boot.

To make your soap balls you will need:
  • 1 bar of soap per child (pretty much any kind, but the soft milky ones do work best)
  • 5 Tbsp water
  • 1/3 Cup of Oatmeal
  • 1 tsp chopped rosemary or other hardy herbs
  • 3 drops of essential oils
  • 1-2 drops food coloring
We ended up with quite the little production line happening.

First the children grated the bars of soap.  This activity was so popular that they grated their way through 20 (yes 20) bars of soap in one sitting.

Next the children gathered herbs from our herb garden, and then cut them into small pieces using scissors:

Mix the grated soap, herbs and oatmeal together in bowls and add the water and oils.  Now mush it all together.

Our 'mushers' got lost in the whole gooey fragrant sensory experience.

Roll the mixture into balls, and leave on a tray to dry.

I'd love to be able to tell you that our soap balls looked as beautiful as the ones from Beautiful Sun Montessori.

They didn't.  We went overboard on the herbs.  In fact, they were more herb than soap!  And our balls were all different shapes and sizes.  But hey, that's okay.  I'm sure they will have amazing exfoliating qualities.

  1. I love your wonderful soap balls! They look like so much fun to make :-)

  2. Okay, so here's another thing I want to do. I'm glad I found you today!

  3. Glad you like them :) The kids were really involved which was great. I can just see the soap ball chrissy presents disintegrating on contact with water and leaving little bits of foliage floating around in baths in the homes of all our preschoolers!

  4. thanks for sharing this link with me, jenny. this looks like a lot of fun, and we need more excuses to make soap! putting it on the list!
